Consumer Reporting Bureaus (CRBs)

About Consumer Reporting Bureaus

The three major nationwide credit repair reporting bureaus, called Consumer Reporting Bureaus (CRBs), are not government run Bureaus. Consumer Reporting Bureaus are for-profit nation wide credit corporations that operate by gathering and selling private, personal credit information to clients. These clients include creditors, insurers, employers, landlords and the multitude of companies that solicit individuals for credit and insurance offers. The information they collect is also sold to clients operating telemarketing and mailing list companies.

Consumer Reporting Bureaus are governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Over the years, many people, including Congress, have expressed great concern about these companies and the profound impact the information they provide can have on an individual's life. Recently, the three major CRBs agreed to pay a settlement of over 2 million dollars, negotiated by the Federal Trade Commission, for violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The companies have acknowledged that mistakes sometimes occur on their credit reports, yet many people have expressed concern that they do too little to address corrections.

The fact is - it is up to every individual to ensure that the credit and personal information contained in their personal credit report is accurate and up to date. It is up to the consumer to prove that information contained in these reports is inaccurate.
